NOKAbout the project
North East Young Writers is designed to support young people over time – creatively and personally. Through year-round writing activities, consistent mentoring and safe spaces, participants are encouraged to explore their own stories, ideas and ambitions.
The programme focuses on communities facing socio-economic disadvantage, where access to arts and culture is limited. By working closely with schools and local partners, New Writing North builds trust and creates accessible entry points for participation.
By combining creative development with pastoral support, the project helps young people build confidence, strengthen relationships and make informed choices about their futures.
What the Kavli Trust funding will support
Funding from the Kavli Trust will enable a targeted two-year programme reaching young people in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the region.
The grant will support:
- Free, weekly creative writing sessions throughout the year
- Long-term partnerships with five schools
- Mentoring by professional writers and local producers
- Family and community-based literacy initiatives
- Inclusive spaces where young people can express themselves
Through early intervention, prevention and long-term engagement, the project aims to improve wellbeing, reduce inequality and generate lasting ripple effects in local communities.
