The Kavli Trust Programme on Health Research

The Kavli Trust Programme on Health Research
The Kavli Foundation's health research programme has, in the period 2017–2024, distributed 172 million Norwegian kroner to research on mental health in children and young people. The funds have been distributed through a dedicated programme for the application process, developed and operated in collaboration between the Kavli Foundation and Stiftelsen Dam.
The Kavli Foundation's health research programme is specifically designed to avoid supporting wasteful research. Prior to each call for funding, relevant knowledge gaps are identified through a comprehensive process involving both subject matter experts and users (patients, next of kin, and healthcare professionals). These knowledge gaps form the basis for the calls for funding.
The Knowledge Gaps
A central ambition of the programme is to avoid supporting research that fails to address real issues, or that contributes little to new or applicable knowledge. The programme is therefore built around a clear insight- and needs-driven approach, with the identification of knowledge gaps at its core. The research supported shall be relevant, targeted, and grounded in actual challenges related to children and young people's mental health – not solely in academic interests alone.

User Panel
The Kavli Foundation invited user groups, including patients, next of kin, and healthcare professionals, within children and young people's mental health to participate in the allocation process.
The users ranked the identified knowledge gaps and research questions through a survey, as the issues for possible research projects. This served as a recommendation when the Kavli Foundation's board made the final decision on which questions were prioritised and included in the call for applications.
