Mamma United

With support from Kavli Trust, Mamma United is helping more mothers in socio-economically disadvantaged areas of Sweden gain knowledge and a sense of community, so they can build a better life for themselves and their children.

About the project

Knowledge, a sense of community and confidence can help mothers make good choices for themselves and their children. This is at the heart of Mamma United’s work. The organisation offers an accessible programme for mothers living in socio-economically disadvantaged areas of Sweden. Many participants are women born outside Sweden, with limited knowledge of Swedish society, limited social networks or low levels of trust in the authorities. This can make it harder to find information, seek help and access available services and support.

The programme consists of 12 two-hour sessions. Through education, discussions and a sense of community, participants gain knowledge and practical tools in areas such as finances, healthy eating, employment, domestic violence, children and crime. The aim is to give mothers greater knowledge and confidence in everyday life, making it easier for them to find support and make good choices for themselves and their children.

Kavli Trust’s support will help introduce the programme in more Swedish municipalities.

How will Kavli Trust’s funding be used?

Kavli Trust has awarded NOK 2 million over two years to Mamma United. The funding will support the expansion of the programme to new Swedish municipalities. Four new municipalities will be given the opportunity to try out the programme each year, with the aim of enabling them to continue it independently in the longer term.

The municipalities will be able to try out the programme free of charge during the initial phase. As part of the model, municipalities commit to continuing the programme for three years if the agreed results are achieved. In this way, the project will both reach more mothers and help establish long-term local responsibility for the programme.

About Mamma United

Mamma United is a Swedish non-profit organisation founded in 2020 by Anja Nordenfelt. The organisation works through education, discussions and community-building, with a particular focus on areas facing socio-economic challenges.

In autumn 2024, Mamma United’s programme was offered in 13 municipalities and 17 areas across Sweden, mainly in the Mälardalen region of central Sweden. The organisation is working to make the model available in more parts of Sweden.

Before founding Mamma United, Anja Nordenfelt spent ten years helping to build up En Frisk Generation, an organisation that also receives support from Kavli Trust.
