Collaborative Young Carers School Support: North East England
New programme to strengthen support in schools for young carers
Thousands of children quietly carry adult responsibilities at home. A new initiative aims to ensure schools identify and support them early – before the impact becomes long-term.

NOKAbout the project
The Collaborative Young Carers School Support programme will improve how schools in North East England identify and support young carers.
Children with caring responsibilities often face lower attendance, reduced attainment, and significant emotional strain. Despite this, many remain invisible within the education system.
Led by Newcastle Carers in partnership with regional organisations, the programme will pilot a whole-school approach across more than 20 schools. It combines staff training, dedicated school roles, improved policies, and stronger links to local support services.
The goal is to give young carers the support they need to thrive in education and beyond.
What the Kavli Trust funding will support
Funding from the Kavli Trust will help embed sustainable change in schools. This includes:
- Training for teachers and school leaders
- Dedicated school engagement officers
- Development of policies and support systems
- Direct support pathways for young carers
- Evaluation and evidence-building for wider impact
The ambition is to influence not just individual schools, but the wider education system.
