BACKGROUND
Mental health problems in children and adolescents make up a considerable part of today’s global disease burden but funding for research addressing these problems is sparse compared to most somatic illnesses.
For a variety of reasons a significant part of today’s health research is wasted and the Kavli Trust is committed to limiting research waste by anchoring the funded research in established and prioritized evidence gaps (as documented in updated systematic reviews).
THE EVIDENCE GAPS
The target group will be children and adolescents aged 9 to 18 and the evidence gaps will be selected in three steps:
- The Kavli Trust Strategic Scientific Committee identifies current evidence gaps
- The Kavli Trust User Panel will provide their preferred prioritization of the evidence gaps
- The Kavli Trust Board selects a subset of evidence gaps for funding
The selected evidence gaps will be formulated as research questions and announced with the call for proposals.
THE CALL
The call for proposals will be announced July 2017. There will be a two-stage application process and in the first stage applicants are invited to submit short pre-proposals (appr. 6000 characters).

ELIGIBILITY
The complete eligibility criteria will be announced with the call for proposals, but here are some of the criteria that will be required:
- Collaborative research projects originating from a universities or academic institutions in Norway, Sweden, Finland or United Kingdom.
- One of the collaborative institutions (host institution) must serve as the formal applicant.
- It is a prerequisite for funding that considerable in-kind contribution is provided by the host institution. A commitment letter must be provided, describing the nature and level of its contribution to the project.
- Funding from the foundation may not be used for overhead and/or other expenses not directly related to the project
- The application is to be submitted by the project leader who must have formal affiliation to the host institution and serve as a professor in a relevant field*
- Research support for each project will be restricted to NOK 3-12.5 M in total for the project period
- The application must be accompanied by a letter of endorsement signed by the heads of all collaborating institutions
- The research project must commit to user involvement by including a named user representative as a member of the research group
Publication should be in accordance with the ICMJE recommendations, and the foundation requires open access publication of all project results.
