CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2017

The Kavli Trust will be awarding a total of NOK 25 M to collaborative research projects addressing selected evidence gaps in child and adolescent mental health. Registration opens July 5th.

Background

Mental health problems in children and adolescents make up a considerable part of today’s global disease burden but funding for research addressing these problems is sparse compared to most somatic illnesses. For a variety of reasons a significant part of today’s health research is wasted and the Kavli Trust is committed to limiting research waste by anchoring research funding in established and prioritized evidence gaps (as documented in updated systematic reviews).

THE EVIDENCE GAPS

The evidence gaps were selected in three steps

  1. The Kavli Trust Strategic Scientific Committee identified 22 evidence gaps by searching for systematic reviews in selected databases
  2. The Kavli Trust User Panel provided their prioritization of the evidence gaps
  3. The Kavli Trust Board selected 10 evidence gaps for funding

The 10 evidence gaps

  1. What is the effect of feedback outcome measures on treatment effectiveness?
  2. What is the effect of group interventions for children who experience family disruption?
  3. What is the effect of internet-based interventions for children, youth, and young adults with anxiety and/or depression?
  4. What is the effect of interventions for children who have experienced violence in close relationships?
  5. What is the effect of interventions for refugee and asylum seeking children?
  6. What is the effect of psychological therapy versus antidepressants or combinations of the two treatments?
  7. What is the effect of psychosocial interventions for school refusal?
  8. What is the effect of psychotherapeutic treatment of internalizing and externalizing problems?
  9. What is the effect of school based interventions for preventing self harm and suicide attempts?
  10. What is the effect of violence and child maltreatment prevention programs for parents?

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application process will happen in two stages:

  • Stage 1: Eligible applicants submit short pre-proposals (appr. 6.000 characters)
    All pre-proposals are screened by the administrative scientific staff and select 40 that go through to the Kavli Trust Scientific Review Committee (SRC) for peer review.  The Kavli Trust Scientific Review Committee will review the pre-proposals by the following five criteria:
  • – Relevance and expected impact
    – Scientific quality
  • – Feasibility
  • – Principal investigator/Research environment
  • – Leadership

Stage 2: Appr. 10 applicants are invited to submit full proposals that will go through a final review by the same committee.

DATES AND DEADLINES

– Launch of pre-proposal form: July 5th / 12:00 CEST
– Pre-proposal deadline: September 27th / 23:59 CEST
– Invitation to final round: December 12th / 12:00 CET
– Full proposal deadline: January 25th / 23:59 CET
– Final decision: TBA, probably late March 2018

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for funding, the projects must meet all the following criteria:

  1. The project must addresses one or more of the 10 selected evidence gaps.
  2. The research project has to originate from universities, academic institutions or research institutions or institutes in Norway, Sweden, Finland or United Kingdom*
  3. The formal applicant has to be an institution (host institution)
  4. The pre-proposal must be submitted by the principal investigator who must have formal affiliation to the host institution
  5. The project can not apply for less than NOK 3 M or more than NOK 12.5 M in total for the project period
  6. Funding from the Kavli Trust can not be used for overhead and/or other expenses not directly related to the project
  7. The host institution must provide considerable in-kind contribution. In the full proposal a commitment letter, describing the nature and level of its contribution to the project must be attached
  8. The full proposal must be accompanied by a letter of endorsement signed by the heads of all collaborating institutions
  9. The research project must commit to user involvement by including two named user representatives as members of the research group
  10. Publications must be in accordance with the ICMJE recommendations and unrestricted access to the published output of research is a requirement
